About the Authors

Sheila Martin Berry and Doug Berry come from backgrounds that may seem inherently opposed to issues of wrongful conviction.  For 10 years, Sheila initiated and directed prosecution-based victim assistance programs in Wisconsin.  Doug's father was murdered in a robbery gone bad.  But both Berrys understand that no one is served when the innocent are convicted.  What they seek is justice.

Full Circle is their second book about a wrongful conviction; their first was Who Killed Sarah, about the death of Sarah Gonstead and the wrongful conviction of Penny Brummer in Madison, Wisconsin.  Their reinvestigation of Sarah's murder led them to found Truth in Justice, an educational nonprofit concerned with wrongful conviction.  The organization's website at http://truthinjustice.org/ was the first of its kind on the internet, and remains the largest and most credible.

Some fears are universal.  Death.  Disease.  The loss of a child.
Going to prison for something you didn’t do.

Full Circle is the story of veteran Green Bay, Wisconsin cop John Maloney.  John never thought he could become the target of the justice system in which he placed so much faith.  When his estranged, addicted wife, Sandy, was found dead in her fire-damaged home, John learned how swiftly he could be convicted and sentenced to life in prison.

Brazenly ambitious special prosecutor Joe Paulus could work a jury like a preacher at a tent revival.  John's defense attorney, Gerald Boyle, had his eye on the prize, a movie about the case in which he was the hero.  John's much-younger girlfriend, Tracy Hellenbrand, provided the titillation factor.  No one challenged the forensic experts who said Sandy was probably strangled and that vodka was used to set the fire.  John's conviction was, as the prosecutor bragged, "a slam dunk."

But had any crimes actually been committed?  Full Circle presents the findings of over a dozen experts who unequivocally say no.  And it goes beyond, to expose
the tacit, continuing conspiracy among state justice officials to keep the truth buried rather than risk civil liability.

In 2005, CBS 48 Hours broadcast "A Question of Murder," a one-hour documentary about the case.   At the conclusion of the broadcast, 48 Hours asked viewers to respond to a poll.

Does John Maloney deserve a new trial?

Not Sure:
1.17%
Yes:
93.45%
No:
5.38%
NOTE: This is not a scientific poll. The results above are for information purposes only, and should not be confused with the results of the scientific polls conducted by CBS News.

A 2006 series by reporter Dee Hall of the Wisconsin State Journal took a closer look at the scientific foundation for the state's claim that the Maloney fire was arson -- a claim the state has vigorously refused to re-examine.

Why should you read Full Circle?

For one simple, compelling reason:  because the same thing can happen to you!

When you understand how it happens, you can demand the reforms that restore protections that have been eroded and corrupted.  Remember, we get the government we demand -- or the government we settle for.

What Readers are Saying

"A particularly difficult-to-correct criminal injustice results when a person is convicted of a crime that did not actually occur. In their compelling new book, Full Circle - How a Veteran Cop was Sentenced to Life for Crimes That Never Happened, Sheila Martin Berry and Doug Berry prompt troubling questions about a high-profile Wisconsin case that resulted in the conviction of police detective John Maloney for the murder of his former wife, Sandy. At a time when past arson scientific testimony is being discredited by contemporary forensic science, Full Circle asks: Was John Maloney rightfully convicted of murder or was Sandy Maloney's death accidental? Full Circle reminds us that accuracy in criminal conviction requires a committed search for truth and that wrongful conviction can happen to anyone."

-Jim Petro, former Ohio Attorney General, and Nancy Petro, co-authors, False Justice - Eight Myths that Convict the Innocent

"Full Circle presents a compelling case of former police officer John Maloney's innocence in the death of his troubled estranged wife. It is also a shocking indictment of the Wisconsin court system that the evidence the authors expose in great detail has never been fully and fairly considered."

-Martin Yant, publisher, editor, investigator and author of Presumed Guilty

"I need to tell you how terrific Full Circle is. Detailed, intricate, well-drawn."

-Ted Newsom, President, Act 3 Productions
